I believe there are two types of goals. The first are reachable and measurable. Then there are goals that are not measurable in the same regard but never-the-less important. The latter of these definitions some call dreams. No matter what, the name both types of goals are important and necessary for human growth.
My main goal for starting my masters was to increase my knowledge, because I believe in its power. I started on the road to achieving my dream goals probably from birth. It is amazing to me to watch my 11 month old daughter learn, and I think about teaching preschool and even now 4th grade and I think about just how much the human mind is capable of all before ten years of age. If only we could figure out how to learn as much as kids do in the time we have rather than wasting it. Learning is a never-ending process, however some are more involved in it than others, and I want to continue to be very involved.
Increasing my knowledge also gives me a boost as a teacher. The more I know the better I can be to my students and anyone else that I may be lucky enough to teach. I have more access to resources and a better knowledge base myself. I have also expanded my thinking in areas of technology and learned to critique and judge on a different, and hopefully more sophisticated level.
Another one of my goals was simply to complete my masters. This is definitely measurable and hopefully can check that goal as complete soon. I live and work in a small community and leading by example is an important attribute to have. Working, going to school and earning an advanced degree while being a wife, mother, and everything in between can hopefully be an inspiration to my students, neighbors and colleagues. This is also important to show that even though finances are getting tighter everywhere, if you put your money where your mouth is then I can prove education is valuable to me.
I have to say setting and achieving goals, or at least steps to toward achieving a goal, is a satisfying feeling. I believe in the adage that success breeds success, and that is true of goals as well, the more you accomplish the more you will set which will, hopefully make one a better person.
