Emily's Journey of Coursework
Below is a summary of the work I have done to complete my Master's Degree
ED 800 Concepts in Educational Inquiry
Spring 2011 Professor: Steven Weiland
This course focused on introducing and familiarizing students with the online program. It also gave insights into the history of education and ideas behind best practices. As a student, I spent a lot of time reading and learning about what an online program would encompass and why and looking at education gurus like John Dewey and learning how the old and the new can come together to create a relevant and sound educational program. The course was self-paced which provided a unique experience from those I was used to in a traditional classroom setting.

KIN 854 Legal & Administrative Issues of Coaching
Spring 2011 Professors: Rick Atkinson & Larry Lauer Jr.
This course focused on the logistical issues you might encounter as a coach or administrator in regards to athletics. There were mock trials/cases that we "ruled" on. As students we had to complete and submit action plans to reduce the likelihood of a lawsuit or injury. The goal was to see situations as possible lawsuits and use as many resources as we had to cover ourselves legally. This included possible problems like equipment, signage, and issues surrounding Title IX.

TE 836 Awards & Classics of Child Literature
Summer 2011 Professor: Laura Apol
This class focused on what it meant to be a Classic. It asked us to look at what makes great writing and questioned who gets to decide that it should be considered award-able or classic. We compared awarded books with non-awarded books. We looked at and discussed texts, illustrations and the social dimensions of the books and the times in which they were written. We spent time learning about popular awards like the Newberry, and the not-so-popular awards, but maybe just as compelling, like the Coretta Scott King Award. Below is my position statement on what I believe makes a classic.

KIN 856 Physical Bases of Coaching
Summer 2012 Professors: Larry Lauer Jr. & George Harnick
This class was dedicated to learning necessary physical aspects of coaching. We learned various muscle groups, how to put together proper nutrition plans, write stretching and warm-up exercised as well as cool downs and proper strength and conditioning regimes. Most of the time we were asked to look at each -category in light of a sport that you coach or would hope to coach. My coaching focus has been younger athletes (8-12 year olds) so the supplements document is geared more toward 8-12 year olds' parents.

TE 842 Elementary Reading Assessment Instruction
Summer 2012 Professors: Megan Block & Randi Stanulis
This course focused on developing the skills to be an expert reading assessor. We looked at many different types of reading assessment, formal and informal. We looked at case studies for each, and statistics for each. We reviewed the different areas of reading assessment like fluency and vocabulary. One of our big projects was to create something we could use to either implement in our classroom routine or to share as a professional development for peers. I have included the PowerPoint I created to share as a professional development tool.
